Advanced Diagnostic Procedures / Exam Technology
Cold Lake EyeCare strives to be on the leading edge of technological advances in eye care. We are constantly upgrading and adding new equipment to our office. In some cases, special testing is needed to diagnose or monitor an eye problem. Our office has the following specialized instruments:
Optical Coherence Tomography (Zeiss Cirrus OCT)
Scans the eye to obtain 3D image of the cornea, anterior chamber angle, retina, optic nerve and retinal nerve fibre layer.
Procedure is comfortable, non-invasive and does not use radiation.
Shows details of retinal abnormalities that are not detected by conventional instruments.
Detects and assesses diseases of the optic nerve including glaucoma.
Detects and documents retinal disease including macular degeneration.
Ultrasound corneal pachymeter
Pachymetry is the measurement of the thickness of the cornea.
This test involves the use of an anesthetic drop and a small probe that touches the front surface of your eye.
When measuring the intraocular pressure of the eye, some measurements are unreliable because of varying thicknesses of the cornea (front layer of the eye).
Thin corneas have also been found to be a risk factor for glaucoma.
Pachymetry is also an integral component of a pre-operative assessment for refractive surgery since the thickness of your cornea is a determining factor of whether you are a good candidate for the procedure.
Digital retinal camera
A digital photograph of the central retina is taken to evaluate and monitor ocular and systemic diseases.
Cold Lake EyeCare has embraced the benefits of teleophthalmology via Secure Diagnostic Imaging in conjunction with Alberta Retinal Consultants at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton. Through our retinal photography and the internet, we have the ability to securely email retinal photos for evaluation in Edmonton. This allows our patients to have direct evaluation by retinal specialists while reducing or eliminating travel to Edmonton.
This is especially important for our diabetic patients
Humphrey Visual Field Analyzer
The Humphrey Visual Field Analyzer is used to check your peripheral vision.
Your peripheral vision is very important for optimum visual function.
Subtle changes in your peripheral vision are often not noticed as they happen slowly over time. The Humphrey Automated Visual Field allows us to detect and measure any vision loss that you may or may not have otherwise noticed.
This is important for the diagnosis of diseases of the retina, optic nerve, and pathways to the visual cortex. This would include some conditions such as glaucoma, retinal detachments, optic neuritis, retinal blood vessel blockage, strokes, certain brain tumors and retinitis pigmentosa.
It is also recommended that patients taking Plaquenil (Hydroxychoroquine) have this test performed annually.
